3 Major Religions Practiced in Pakistan

Pakistan is the home of followers of more than 12 Religions. This article will elaborate details about three major religions practiced in Pakistan. Statistically, majority of Population that is composed of over 96% population of Pakistan consist of Muslims, 4% remaining population consist of Hindus, Christian and followers of other Religions.

Pakistan was the only country on map of world in 19th Century that is created on basis of Religion. Pakistan is an Islamic Republic as per constitution.


The majority of population consists of Muslims. There are two Sects in Muslims

  1. Sunni
  2. Shia


It is estimated that approximately 80 to 85% population of Muslims belong to Sunni Sect.

Holy Places

These are called “Mosuqe” or in Urdu “Masjid”. Few prominent Mosques are

  1. Shah Faisal Mosque, Islamabad
  2. Badshahi Mosuque, Lahore
  3. Wazir Khan Mosque, Peshawer


There are no exact figures available but it comprises of 11 to 15% of Muslim Population.

Holy Places

These are also called “Mosque” or “Imam Bargah” in Urdu. Prominent Moque of Shia Sect are:

  1. Karbala Gamay Shah, Lahore
  2. Bari Imam, Islamabad
  3. Hussainya Iranya Imambargah, Karachi

Prominent Personalities

Muhammad Ali Jinnah

Muhammad Ali Jinnah, founder Pakistan belong to Shia Sect of Mulim. He was called “Baba-i-Qaum” (Father of Nation) for his services for Nation.

Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan

Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan,founder of Uranium Enrichment Program in Pakistan. It later leads to the development of “Atomic Bomb”. He belongs to Sunni Sect of Mulims.


Hinduism is the second largest religion after Islam. Majority of Hindu lives in Sindh Province in Pakistan.

Holy Places

There are numerous places to Worship and Practice Hinduism but there are some Prominent Places. In Hinduism the follower called them “Mandir”. Few of them are

  1. Katas Raj Temple, Chakwal
  2. Hinglaj Mata Mandir, Lasbela
  3. Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir, Karachi

Prominent Personalities

Justice Rana Bhagwandas

Justice Rana Bhagwan Das served as Senior Judge of Supreme Court. Moreover, he served as Acting Chief Justice as well during 2005 and then 2006 while Foreign tours of serving Chief Justice of that time. He passed away in 2015.

Deepak Perwani (Designer)

Deepak Perwani is a prominent fashion Designer and Actor based in Karachi. He recently created the World Largest Kurta.


Christianity is the third largest religion in Pakistan. It is estimated to be religion of approximately 3 Million population.  There are two further branches of Christianity.

  1. Protestant
  2. Catholic

Holy Places

There are many places that are specific to Worship and Practice Religion. Christian Called these Places “Church” Few of them are:

  1. Sacred heart cathedral Lahore
  2. Holy trinity cathedral, Karachi
  3. Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Murree
